Five people from Hull have been issued with £400 fines for fly-tipping in the city.
In the five separate incidents, the offenders were caught dumping waste in Beverley Road, Wellsted Street, Alfred Street and Exmouth Street.
Hull City Council is continuing to warn residents to ensure they dispose of their waste responsibly through the services it provides to avoid receiving a fine or legal prosecution.
Earlier this year, the local authority launched a citywide fly-tipping campaign reminding people of how to dispose of their waste.
People who are caught fly-tipping will be fined £400, or prosecuted with the possibility of an unlimited fine and the recovery of clean-up costs.
The campaign also focuses on reminding people not to engage with rogue waste removers via social media, who offer often very cheap waste services before illegally dumping it in the city.
Doug Sharp, head of waste management at Hull City Council, said: “These fines could have easily been avoided if the waste was disposed of correctly.
“Residents have access to our wheelie bin collections, free bulky collection scheme or the three household waste and recycling centres located throughout Hull.
“If you are unsure about how to manage your waste, please contact the council directly so we can advise you on your best option.”
To ensure waste is not fly-tipped, residents should follow these guidelines:
- Dispose and recycle household waste through regular kerbside collections
- To dispose of unwanted bulky household items, call 01482 300300 or visit hull.gov.uk
- All household waste and recycling sites remain open and social distancing rules should be followed. Find more on the Hull City Council website
- If you use a contractor, always ask to see a waste carrier’s licence and check them out with the Environment Agency by calling 08708 506506 or visit the Environment Agency website
- Don’t pay cash and always ask for a receipt – if prices seems too good to be true, they probably are. If waste is subsequently found fly-tipped, the resident could be fined or face prosecution
