Hull City Council’s Priory Woods cemetery on Priory Road is to receive improvement works.
A two-year phased programme of works will begin later this year, subject to planning approval from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
Works will include installing a more comprehensive drainage system throughout the cemetery, including the Mistletoe area of the site where many burials have already taken place. This will mean the cemetery is less affected by heavy rainfall in the future.
The second phase of the project will include redesigning and landscaping other areas of the site, plus the entrance to the cemetery and visitor centre.
Councillor Mike Thompson, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Communities said: “Priory Woods is an incredibly peaceful and private site, and this investment will ensure it stands the test of time and is improved for all families that will use it in the future.
“We are working closely with specialists to ensure that work around existing graves is carried out with the upmost of dignity and respect. We have written to all leaseholders affected by the works to inform them of the works being carried out.
“Drop-in sessions are being planned so anyone with interest can see phase one plans and a member of staff will be on site to answer any questions people may have. These sessions will be advertised in due course.”
If the plans are approved it is expected that work will be completed by 2021.
