Work to install new steps and access ramp to the entrance of Hull’s Maritime Museum is well under way.
As part of the third phase of the public realm improvements, these enhancements are expected to take 10 weeks to complete, using the same York stone to match the current building sources from Yorkshire.
With support from the DCMS Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund and significant donations from visitors, the new ramp and steps will complement the museum’s Grade II*-listed Victorian façade.
Once completed it will improve access, offering all visitors the same inclusive, high-quality experience.
Councillor Daren Hale, Portfolio Holder for Economic Investment, Regeneration, Planning, Land and Property, said: “Work to the access ramp is progressing well. These much needed improvements to access are part of the wider ambition to increase accessibility within the museum.
“Extensive consultation was completed with access groups to ensure the very best museum and experience for every visitor who will come through the doors once the museum reopens and the extensive refurbishment is complete.”
The ramp installation forms part of the third phase of the public realm works, which are currently taking place at Paragon Interchange and St Stephens shopping Centre.
Hull contractor Ashcourt Group is carrying out the £2.3m scheme. It is expected that the work will be completed in September.
Hull Maritime Museum will reopen to the public in late 2023.
