Hull City Council celebrates cohort of newly qualified social workers

Colleagues from across Adult Social Care and Children’s Services came together to celebrate the hard work of Newly Qualified Social Workers during their Assessed and Supported Year of Employment (ASYE).

The annual ASYE Celebration Event is a joyful and reflective tradition where the efforts of both newly qualified social workers and their assessors is recognised.

It took place on Monday 16 June at the Guildhall.

The ASYE is a 12-month, employer-based programme of support and assessment for newly qualified social workers.

It forms a vital part of Hull City Council’s approach to ‘growing our own’ social workers.

Both Adult Social Care and Children’s Services have seen major benefits to recruitment and retention linked to the success of their respective ASYE programmes.

Over the past 12 months, Hull City Council has supported 69 newly qualified social workers through the ASYE.

Social workers are people that help improve people’s lives by supporting them with social and personal difficulties. They work with individuals and families, both children and adults.

During the event, numerous fun activities were co-ordinated by leads in practice across both services. These were aimed at encouraging reflections from newly qualified social workers, their assessors, senior managers and portfolio holders.

As part of the celebration, attendees were able to hear from children, young people, adults and their families, who took the time to provide written feedback to social workers about the services they had received.

The newly qualified social workers were all presented with their certificates of achievement from the directors – Tracy Meyerhoff, the Director of Adult Social Care and Pauline Turner, the Director for Children and Family Services. The council’s Chief Executive, Matt Jukes, also attended to offer his gratitude and congratulations.

Councillor Linda Chambers, the portfolio holder for Adult Social Care at Hull City Council, said: “A huge well done to the newly qualified social workers on completing their programme. We recognise what a significant achievement this is and hope they feel a great sense of pride.”

Councillor Linda Tock, the portfolio holder for Children’s Services at Hull City Council, said: “Social work is a uniquely rewarding career, where you can really make a difference to the life of a child, adult, or a whole family. We encourage anyone wanting to find out more about becoming a social worker to visit our website.”
