Museums Quarter recognised at Yorkshire and Humber Infant Feeding Awards

Hull and East Riding Museum of Archaeology and the Streetlife Museum have been named Most Infant Feeding Friendly Public Place at the 2026 Yorkshire and Humber Infant Feeding Awards.

The awards ceremony, held on Friday 23 January at York St John University, celebrates individuals and organisations making a significant contribution to supporting and promoting infant feeding across the region.

Both museums were early supporters of the Milk Trail, developed by Hull City Council and the Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s Infant Feeding Team, and have hosted the annual Milk Trail Picnic in the Museums Gardens for the past two years.

Each museum provides a dedicated seating area for parents to feed their babies, and all staff have completed breastfeeding awareness training delivered by the Infant Feeding Team.

Hull enjoyed strong success on the night, with additional awards presented to Hull City Council, the University of Hull, and the Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust.

Councillor Rob Pritchard, Hull City Council portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: “We’re incredibly honoured to receive this recognition.

“By collaborating with the Infant Feeding Team, we have been able to make real, positive changes.

“We want our museums to feel like home to every family who walks through the door, and supporting infant feeding is a key part of that.”

The award is timely, as the council have just announced that, for the first time in the city’s history, over 50% of babies in Hull are being breastfed at six weeks old.

Councillor Linda Tock, Portfolio Holder for Children’s services, said: “This award feels especially meaningful at a time when Hull is celebrating such a historic achievement in infant feeding.

“Reaching a breastfeeding rate of more than 50% shows the impact that strong partnerships and collaboration can have across our city.

“We’re incredibly proud that our museums play a small part in that wider journey, offering families a warm, welcoming place, were feeding their babies – however they choose – feels completely supported.”

Hull and East Riding Museum of Archaeology and Streetlife are open 10am-4.30pm Monday to Saturday and 11am-4pm on Sunday.
