Hull City Council has appointed CR Reynolds Ltd, a Hessle-based construction company, to deliver two roundabout improvement schemes in Kingswood.
Following the completion of several new housing developments in the area over the past few years, the roundabout works at Ennerdale Leisure Centre and Wawne Road / Bude Road will help increase capacity on the highway network.
The schemes will also:
- improve cycle and pedestrian facilities to support people to walk and ride more
- provide new signalised cycle and pedestrian crossing points to improve safety
- see the management of trees in the area, some of which are proposed to be taken up and replanted. Where this cannot be accommodated, twice as many replacement trees will be planted to improve the local landscape.
The multi-million-pound investment has been funded through the council’s capital programme as well as an allocation of funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).
“These schemes represent a major investment in our city’s future, tackling congestion and ensuring our roads can cope with growth while making them safer and more accessible for everyone,” said Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure.
“The inclusion of enhanced pedestrian and cycling facilities is especially welcome, as it strengthens our commitment to supporting sustainable transport and active and healthier travel choices.
“This project will deliver real benefits for residents and businesses in Kingswood and across Hull.”
The council and its contractor will take a phased approach to the works to minimise disruption and will work on both sites simultaneously to shorten the overall length of the construction period.
Initial works will start early in the New Year, with a focus away from the highway, to prepare the sites. The main schemes are then planned to get underway in early March and will be complete by the end of the year.
Steve Jones, pre-construction director from CR Reynolds Ltd, said: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with Hull City Council on the redevelopment of roundabouts in Kingswood.
“We understand the significance of this scheme to the Kingswood area, as it will ensure improved access to key local destinations, including Kingswood Academy and Ennerdale Leisure Centre, enhancing connectivity for students, residents and visitors alike.
“Securing this contract ensures ongoing employment for many local residents and supports businesses throughout the community.”
