Hull City Council’s Cabinet will consider major investment for Costello playing fields that will benefit sporting groups and the local community, together with a new purpose-built gym on George Street for the use of Hull College students.
If approved, the plans could release funding to create state-of-the-art facilities at Costello on Anlaby Park Road North.
The plans would enhance the resources on-site, including refurbishing and improving existing sports pitches to a national standard, one being a 4G floodlit pitch.
The current changing facilities will also be improved and extended, whilst there will be disabled access to all the amenities and the existing tennis courts will be available for bookings.
These works will provide high quality, year-round community use sports provision at evenings and weekends, complementing the council’s wider commitments to improve footpaths in the park and Costello Stadium’s running track.
Under the plans, community and sporting groups will continue to have full access to the public green spaces, which is the majority of the site.
They will also be able to use all the upgraded sports pitch facilities when they are not in use by Hull College.
This investment will allow the college to relocate its current outdoor sports provision from the Steve Prescott Sports Centre at the Endeavour site on Beverley Road which, going forward, will be the new home of Hull Trinity House Academy.
The college, which has worked closely with Hull City Council, will use Costello playing fields between 10:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday (6pm Tuesdays).
Cllr Tock, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: “Residents in the area have been asking for improved facilities in this area for some time and this is one way we can deliver what they have asked.
“An enhanced facility can provide state-of-the-art sporting provision for the whole community and allow the council to create an additional secondary school places the city requires.
“If plans are approved by Cabinet on 27 March, we will be asking the community their views on this proposal and, by working together, I hope this investment will benefit local residents for years to come.”
Should these plans be approved by Cabinet, consultation with the local community is expected to take place on Saturday 1st April from 9-11am, Tuesday 4th April from 9-11am and Wednesday 5th April from 6-8pm.
These will be held at Friends of Peter Pan Park Café on Pickering Road.
