Despite the pouring rain, Hull city centre saw an incredible turnout for the Christmas lights switch-on.
Thousands turned out for the moment that signalled the start of Christmas in the city as Lord Mayor Councillor Steve Wilson and special guests hit the big button to bathe Queen Victoria Square in festive illumination.

The deluge from the sky continued but it couldn’t dampen the spirits of the hardy souls wrapped in waterproofs and sheltered under umbrellas to brave one of the city’s most popular events.
Hull city centre’s 52ft Christmas tree looked resplendent after the Norway spruce was lit up to complete its journey from Woods Christmas Tree Farm in the midlands.

Crowds sung and danced to a host of live performances programmed by Back to Ours, led by MC Andy Train from the balcony of Hull City Hall.

And the Lord Mayor thanked crowds and his guest, Special Olympics GB athlete Sophie Carter, on his Twitter account before praising Back to Ours for putting on a “fab show”.
