Schoolchildren in Hull will have the chance to show their artistic flair as part of a competition to celebrate the reopening of Albert Avenue Pools this summer.
The facility has undergone extensive refurbishment over the last 18 months, including the construction of a heated outdoor lido.
To mark the reopening, pupils in Year 5 across Hull’s primary schools are being tasked to submit drawings in conjunction with the Royal Life Saving Society UK’s Drowning Prevention Week which takes place from 17-24 June.
The artwork should be linked to water safety and each school will pick a drawing to be entered into the final, where the winner will be picked by dignitaries via a hook a duck event on the lido.
The winner’s school will receive a free swimming lesson in the lido for their class once they return to school following the summer holidays in what will be the first outdoor lesson in Hull in excess of 30 years.
The winning design will be replicated onto a large rubber duck and will take pride of place on site, alongside second and third place entries.
The remaining entries will be returned to participating schools to be put on display.
Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure at Hull City Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for schoolchildren to show their creativity whilst also marking an important milestone in preparation for works being completed on Albert Avenue Pools.
“I anticipate a wide range of brilliant designs and look forward to seeing the winner later this summer.”
Alongside the new lido, the project at Albert Avenue Pools will see the construction of a large gym and fitness studio, the refurbishment and redecoration of the whole building, the replacement of all the mechanical and electrical systems, as well as new heating and ventilation systems.
The project is being delivered by Hull Esteem Consortium LEP, the council’s pre-procured framework, with work undertaken by local contractors Hobson and Porter.
In conjunction with the schools’ competition, Hull Culture and Leisure will be sharing water safety videos across its social media platforms @liveithull and @lovehullparks during Drowning Prevention Week and across the summer.
