Hull Schools Library scoops national award

Hull Schools Library Service has won a Libraries Connected Award.

Following a ceremony on Tuesday 11 June, Hull’s service took home the Children’s Promise award. Judges commented that Hull Schools Library Service ‘offers schools so much more than that which is stated on their core offer: they invest so much time, knowledge and passion in to improving reading outcomes of children and young people in all of their schools’.

The awards celebrate the achievements of library workers who have had an exceptional impact on their library service, users or their local communities.

Winners were chosen by an expert panel including Luke Burton, Director, Libraries at Arts Council England; Debbie Hicks, Creative Director at The Reading Agency and Lucy Banks, Programme Manager at the Association of Senior Children’s and Education Librarians. They were joined by several Heads of Library Services as well as representatives from OverDrive, the headline sponsor of the Awards for the fourth year in succession.

Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: “I would like to extend a huge congratulations to the Hull Schools Library Service. The team works tirelessly every year providing incredible opportunities for children across the city.

“With events like the James Reckitt Hull Children’s Book Award and visits from top-class authors including Dame Jacqueline Wilson recently, it’s easy to see why their work shone through to the judges. I’m delighted their hard work has been recognised.”

Isobel Hunter MBE, Libraries Connected Chief Executive, said: “At our awards ceremony, I am delighted anew by the determination and creativity of public library staff. This year’s winners and runners-up stand out for their unwavering commitment to providing a service to their local communities that goes far above and beyond the requirements of their job specifications. Library staff continue to work in difficult, straitened financial circumstances, making their achievements all the more remarkable.”
