Start-Up Day: Get support for your business at Hull Central Library

The Business & IP Centre’s Start-up Day is back for 2021 on Thursday 11 November at Hull Central Library to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week. A wealth of business support and expert guidance will be available for anyone with a business idea or a business they would like to grow.

Join us for a day of free talks and practical advice sessions designed to get your business idea off to a flying start. This year, inspired by COP26 we’re bringing sustainability in business to the fore. We believe sustainable businesses play a significant role in encouraging more sustainable behaviour.

Headline talks include:

  • Terry King OBE explains how we can make our businesses more ethical in easy and profitable ways
  • John Olivant will guide us through those potential start-up pitfalls with his top tips
  • Steve Page will share the story of his local, inspiring and sustainable wind powered invention
  • Liz Turpin will provide tips on making your business more financially sustainable
  • Adrian Fisher discusses his sustainable business Rooted in Hull

Lunch will be provided by British Library Business & IP Centre National Network Case Study, Marla’s Deli of Hull.

Business & IP Centres can open up the path to entrepreneurship for anyone with a business idea, regardless of their background. Over half of those who use a BIPC to set up a business are women and a third are from under-represented ethnic backgrounds, more than triple the national averages for business ownership in the UK. This diverse user base speaks to the accessibility and community-based ethos of public library-based support.

The Network has a strong track record of supporting local economies, and in 2019 an independent economic evaluation showed the BIPC was creating £6.95 of public value for every £1 invested, and in the three years to 2019 supported the creation of 12,288 new businesses, 55% of which were started by female entrepreneurs and some 31% by BAME entrepreneurs.

Hull Culture & Leisure Chair, Councillor Marjorie Brabazon said:

“Start-Up Day 2021 provides our local budding entrepreneurs and business owners the chance to come together for a day full of inspiration and expert guidance.

“BIPC Hull is a vital service to our region, offering business support and guidance to anyone with a business or business idea, regardless of background or stage of life.

With a focus on sustainability, Start-Up Day 2021 joins the worldwide initiative to tackle the climate crisis and make a positive impact in society.”
