Littering offences can result in a £150 fine or prosecution.

Residents urged to dispose of litter responsibly to avoid prosecution

Hull City Council is urging residents to dispose of their litter responsibly following the recent prosecution of four individuals who failed to pay fixed penalty notices for littering.

The individuals each received criminal records and in total were ordered to pay £1,158 in fines and costs – an average of £289 per person.

The offences took place on:

  • Mount Pleasant
  • Holderness Road
  • Anlaby Road
  • Beverley Road

Fixed penalties for the above littering offences were issued by the council’s enforcement contractor, LA Support Limited.

Councillor Mike Ross, leader of Hull City Council, said: “The vast majority of residents in Hull take great care of our city and take their litter home or dispose of it responsibly. However, unfortunately, there are still some individuals who think it’s acceptable to throw down litter and make the city look unsightly.

“By taking a strong stance on enforcement action, we want to make it absolutely clear that littering will not be tolerated. We urge residents to always dispose of waste responsibly and in accordance with the law, to avoid being fined or prosecuted.”

According to Keep Britain Tidy, over two million pieces of litter are dropped across the UK every day, costing more than £1 billion annually in street cleaning.

Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, makes it an offence for any person to throw down, drop or otherwise deposit and leave litter.

Anyone seen littering faces receiving a £150 fine.

If the fine is not paid the case is passed on to the council’s legal team and the courts for prosecution.

Prosecution for littering will result in a criminal record and a maximum fine of £2,500.

To avoid being fined or prosecuted, the council urges residents to use on-street litter bins or take their waste home for disposal.
