The main East Park entrance gates on Holderness Road have reopened.

East Park gates reopen as part of major park improvements

Significant improvement works to enhance accessibility at East Park have been completed, including the reopening on the main park gates on Holderness Road.

East Park now features additional parking spaces, including accessible spaces, a new footpath, new signs and lines for a new road layout with a one-way system and added speed tables.

A one-way system has been implemented.

Tactile paving, designed to aid individuals with visual impairments, has also been installed at crossing points, whilst new bollards have been added for pedestrian safety.

To ensure one of Hull’s most popular parks remains a safe and enjoyable place for all visitors, under this new layout only a limited section of the road within the park is now accessible to vehicles.

New road markings have been installed.

A key highlight of this scheme is the reopening of the main entrance gates on Holderness Road, which closed in 2020 due to Covid-19 social distancing restrictions.

This reopening provides easier access to the park, making it more convenient and inclusive for visitors.

The scheme was initially developed in response to issues raised by the Choices and Rights Disability Coalition.

Following this – and to ensure community input – Hull City Council hosted public engagement sessions in December 2023 at Woodford Leisure Centre and the enhancements have been shaped by the valuable feedback gathered during these events.

Cllr Rob Pritchard, the council’s portfolio holder for culture, leisure and customer services, said: “East Park is one of Hull’s most cherished green spaces and ensuring it is accessible for all visitors is a top priority for the council.

“The reopening of the main entrance gate on Holderness Road, along with the other improvements, has significantly enhanced the park’s inclusivity, functionality and appeal, providing free and safe activities for visitors, tying in with the council’s ethos of promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.

“We would like to thank our park users for their patience and understanding whilst these works were completed and hope that they enjoy the improvements for many years to come.”
