Proposals for an extension to the street trading area in Albion Square, to include parts of Jameson Street and Prospect Street, are to be considered by Hull City Council’s Cabinet later this month.
The council has received additional enquiries from prospective street traders and the proposals would also allow a wider variety of merchants, enhancing and maintaining the quality of the current offer.
The changes would also allow for trading to continue during the ongoing redevelopment of Albion Square until these works are completed.
If approved by Cabinet, the proposals would be subject to a period of consultation which would enable stakeholders, including local businesses, to make comments.
Cllr Paul Drake-Davis, the council’s portfolio holder for regeneration and housing, said: “The Street Trading Consent policy needs to primarily support Hull’s economy and there are certain businesses delivered most effectively through on-street trading.
“The council’s current policy works effectively, however there are shortcomings which need addressing and amendments to it could ensure a balance is found.
“The aim of this extension is to relieve pressure on the current trading area whilst also adding to the character and vibrancy of the area’s retail and leisure offer, but we want to hear the views of others in the area as well before moving forward with any changes.”
A revised policy would come into effect on 1 April 2024 and would be reviewed at three-year intervals.
