Heritage Open Days 2023 begins this month, giving you the chance to explore some of the amazing buildings around the city.
Every year, the festival reflects the cultural heritage of England and works with local organisations and individuals within the city.
Here’s seven places you should explore in Hull on Heritage Open Days 2023:
Hull & East Riding Museum
35 High Street, HU1 1NQ, 8 – 17 Sep 2023, From 10am
Visitors to the museum can look forward to an experience that is unique, educational and fun.
Walk through an Iron Age Village, enter a Roman Bath House and look at the stunning mosaics. Discover a mysterious crew of wooden warriors and see our medieval treasures.
Hull City Hall
Carr Lane, HU1 3RQ, 12 Sep 2023, 10am & 2pm
Hull City Hall is a Grade II listed building in the city centre. Built in the early 1900s, the hall was designed by architect Joseph Hirst in the Baroque Revival style.
Badly damaged during the second world war, Hull City Hall was fully restored in 1951.
Pacific Exchange Guided Tour
High Street, HU1 1PS, 8 – 9 Sep 2023, 2:15pm
Pacific Exchange was a trading exchange for Hull’s prosperous grain and seeds trade at the start of the 20th Century.
The tour will showcase the buildings’ opulent fixtures and fittings, as well as explain how it was used as the headquarters of the City of Culture Company, which delivered Hull’s year in the limelight in 2017.
Hull New Theatre
Kingston Square, HU1 3HF, 11 Sep 2023, From 11am
Hull New Theatre has a fascinating history since it first opened in 1939. Since then, The venue has completed a huge £15.9m renovation project.
Don’t miss your chance to explore Hull’s premium theatre space and see why it has its reputation as one of the leading touring theatres in the UK.
Streetlife Museum
153 High Street, HU1 1PS, 8 – 17 Sep 2023, From 10am
Step back in time with 200 years of transport history and experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the past with Hull’s Streetlife Museum.
Walk down a 1940’s high street, board a goods train and also enjoy a carriage ride or vintage car ride.
Wilberforce House Museum
26 High Street, HU1 1NQ, 8 – 17 Sep 2023, From 10am
Visit the birthplace of William Wilberforce and discover the story of the historic struggle to abolish the slave trade. The museum tells the story of the slave trade and abolition, as well as dealing with contemporary slavery.
Ferens Art Gallery
Queen Victoria Square, HU1 3RA, 11 – 17 Sep 2023, From 10am
Discover outstanding art collections and enjoy vibrant exhibitions in Hull’s Ferens Art Gallery.
Donated to the city by Thomas Ferens, the gallery opened in 1927. It was restored in 1991 and has also recently undergone extensive refurbishment.
