Meet Hull’s new Young Mayor

Eunice has been voted as Hull’s new Young Mayor.

Almost 100 young people met in the Guildhall last month and cast their votes for who they would like to lead Hull Young People’s Parliament.

Six candidates put forward their manifestos anonymously and those in attendance made their choices based on those submissions.

Eunice, 14, of Newland School for Girls, received the most votes, replacing outgoing Young Mayor for Hull, Amaya.

She will be supported by Deputy Young Mayor, Isabel, 15, of St Mary’s College.

Eunice said: “Being voted as Hull’s Young Mayor, I’m not going to lie, it’s a big thing for me. I am so happy and so grateful to everyone who voted for me.

“My ambition is to help to make Hull a safer place, especially for girls and women. They need to know that it’s safe to walk home at night.

“Hull Young People’s Parliament is a safe space and it really is a place for your voice to be heard, especially as a black person in a city where no one knows me and I’ve sometimes felt that I don’t belong.

“I would recommend 1,000 per cent for young people to get involved in Hull Young People’s Parliament.”

Cllr Linda Tock, portfolio holder for children services and young people at Hull City Council, said: “Each year, I am astounded at the passion and knowledge that our young people have for our city.

“All six candidates put forward tremendous manifestos and I have no doubt it was a tough decision for those voting.

“It’s great to see so many people interested in Hull Young People’s Parliament and it bodes well for future politics in Hull.

“Congratulations to Eunice and to Isabel, I look forward to seeing how you strive to make our city a better place for young people.

“Thank you also to outgoing mayor, Amaya, for all her efforts during her time as young mayor and I wish her well in what I hope is a future in politics.”

Vicky Callaghan, headteacher at Newland School for Girls, added: “We are immensely proud of Eunice following her appointment as Hull Young Mayor.

“Her commitment, leadership and passion for making a difference are truly inspiring to all of us at Newland School for Girls – last academic year she was the driving force behind the inception of our Debate Club.

“Eunice’s achievement not only reflects her dedication, but also embodies the values we strive to nurture in every student.

“We are excited to see the positive impact she will have on the youth of Hull and look forward to supporting her journey as she brings her voice and vision to our community.”

In addition to voting, the young people in attendance on the day also took part in a workshop discussing three top themes from Make Your Mark, a national ballot where young people vote on their top themes.

In Hull, the top three themes are mental health, crime and safety, plus jobs and the economy.
