TravelWise Week campaign shortlisted for national award

Hull has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award for a campaign, which took place earlier this year, encouraging residents to choose more sustainable and active travel choices.

The city was one of 17 locations in the UK to put on a programme of events for TravelWise Week, in September, including a bike library and secure bike marking event, promotion of the Hull Maritime guided walks and Rusty Riders programme as well as a bus surgery in Queen Victoria Square on World Car Free Day.

Now, Modeshift, the not-for-profit sustainable travel organisation that organises TravelWise Week, has confirmed that Hull City Council has been shortlisted in the TravelWise Week Campaign – Local Authority Category of the 2023 TravelWise Week Awards.

“TravelWise Week provided us, as a council, with the perfect opportunity to present realistic travel alternatives to employees, students and the wider public over private car use as well as raise awareness around the impacts of travel choices on an individual’s health and wellbeing and on the environment,” said Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transportation, roads and highways.

“With the support of our partners, including Humberside Police, R-evolution, Neighbourhood Network, First Step Sports Group, East Yorkshire Buses and Stagecoach, we were effectively able to demonstrate greener and cleaner travel modes within the city.

“Being shortlisted for this award is a testament to the hard work of our staff, our partners and volunteers and highlights our commitment to encouraging and supporting active travel choices in Hull.”

The awards will be presented at the Team Modeshift National Sustainable Awards ceremony taking place on Thursday 23 November at York Racecourse.
