Students at Bellfield Primary School are taking part in the Modeshift STARS project

Bike to School Week sees launch of new active travel programme

Students at Bellfield Primary School took part in the launch of Modeshift STARS, a programme designed to encourage youngsters to travel actively.

As part of Bike to School Week, Modeshift STARS are now offering training to children and young people to develop their confidence and skills to make their journey to school by bicycle.

The programme is being offered to schools across the city in a bid to inspire students to walk or cycle to and from school.

10-year-old Wiki who attends Bellfield Primary School said she is looking forward to taking part in the training, as she regularly cycles with her family around the city.

She said: “I did the Bikeability scheme when I was younger and I learnt a lot. It’s all about safety and made me feel better about cycling on the road, so I am looking forward to doing the Modeshift one.”

Councillor Shane McMurray, portfolio holder for children’s services said: “We are delighted that Modeshift STARS is being launched in Hull and we hope that schools across Hull take up this opportunity to encourage their students to travel actively.

“We recognise that supporting the mental and physical wellbeing of our students is vital to their development, and walking and cycling to and from school is a great way to do this.

“Ultimately we want to work with our residents to build a cleaner, greener city and one way to do this is to enable people to travel sustainably by improving cycling and walking facilities and ensuring they are equipped with the right skills to travel safely and actively.”

First Step Sports Group are delivering the programme on behalf of Hull City Council, and can assist with the application process, how to complete initiatives and to achieve the Modeshift STARS accreditation.
