Baiylan Ellerington, age 7, from Gillhill Primary school, has been picked as the winner of the Christmas card design competition by the council’s Chief Executive, Matt Jukes.
Baiylan’s chosen design will now be used for the council’s e-Christmas cards this year.
Children across all primary schools in Hull were asked to design a Christmas card, and 241 children submitted entries from 17 of the city’s primary schools.
Steve Brady, Leader of Hull City Council said: “We wanted children to create a picture that shows what Christmas means to them and we’re delighted to have received so many great designs; from Christmas trees, snowmen, Father Christmas sliding down a chimney, to families wearing festive jumpers and nativity scenes, it certainly shows that we have some very talented young artists.
“It was a pleasure to see them all and a very difficult task to pick the winning design, but Baiylan’s Santa in a sleigh, decorated with the three crowns from our city’s crest, symbolises both our city and the magic of Christmas.“
Along with Baiylan’s design being sent to hundreds of people and businesses, giving Christmas wishes, he will also receive a £40 Waterstones gift card.
Darcey Turner-Craven, Year 3 of Gillshill Primary School, whose design was given second place, will receive a £30 Waterstones gift card, and Sofia Farara, age 5, from Paisley Primary School was awarded third place and will receive a £20 Waterstones gift card.
Seven further pupils have been awarded a £10 Waterstones gift voucher, plus a selection box, for their designs:

- Thomas, Class 12, Age 13, Tweendykes Special School
- Eloise, Class 12, Age 12, Tweendykes Special School
- Milana Sakalauskaite, Age 8, Stockwell Academy
- Evie, Year 5, Age 10, Stockwell Academy
Jo Moxon, Head of Education in Hull said: “Whilst Christmas events and activities are being done differently this year, schools are working hard to ensure children can still enjoy festivities. I’m grateful to everyone who took part and it’s great that the Council can celebrate our children’s creative talents in this way.”
