Hull’s three household waste and recycling centres are to reopen next week for essential trips only.
The centres located in Burma Drive, Amsterdam Road (Sutton Fields) and Wiltshire Road will open on Monday 4 May for residents who are unable to keep any excess waste at home. The sites will be open from 10am to 5pm.
Social distancing guidelines will be enforced and no more than six vehicles will be allowed on site at one time. Those with Covid-19 symptoms are asked not to visit the site.
A maximum of one person per vehicle is permitted, unless disposing of a larger item. Staff on site will not be able to assist residents during this period.
The move comes after communities secretary Robert Jenrick asked local authorities to reopen household waste and recycling centres after the majority of sites in England were closed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Councillor Anita Harrison, portfolio holder for waste management at Hull City Council, said: “Safety is our main priority during these uncertain times and we urge residents to check the restrictions and only make this journey if it is absolutely necessary.
“Residents should expect long waiting times, so we ask you to be patient as our site operatives work hard to manage the service.”
Residents should not bring any waste to the site which may be infected with Covid-19. This should be stored at home separately for 72 hours, double-bagged and put in the general waste bin which will be emptied on normal collection day. This is in line with Government advice.
Residents will not be able to dispose of asbestos during the restricted period and are asked not to bring the material to site.
Vehicles should also display a residents’ pass in the windscreen as normal, or bring proof of Hull residency in the form of a utility bill or driving licence.
Councillor Harrison said: “It is expected that the Sutton Fields centre will be particularly busy with queuing only permitted from the Holwell Road end, so residents may wish to consider using either the Burma Drive or Wiltshire Road centres which may be quieter.”
No trailers or vans will be permitted to use the sites.
For the weeks starting Monday 4 and 11 May, the centres will be open on Wednesday and Thursday. From week commencing Monday 18 May, the centres will return to their usual opening times and close on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
