A talented teenage athlete from Hull has been awarded an annual membership to Hull’s leisure facilities as part of a scheme to help the city’s future sporting stars reach world-class podiums.
Tommy Jackson, 14, from east Hull, has become the second young person to receive the award through the Hull Culture and Leisure (HCAL) Talented Athlete Scheme.
Tommy is part of England Judo performance pathway and has trained with the East Yorkshire Judo Academy since the age of seven. He has spent the past year in the England squad and was also selected to train with Great Britain.
Tommy finished seventh in the Commonwealth Championships and competed in the British Judo Championships in November.

He will now receive an annual Junior Live it fitness membership, giving him access to all leisure facilities operated by HCAL to support his training.
Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, Chair of HCAL, said: “This scheme is designed to assist talented young athletes in gaining access to high quality facilities to reach their full potential in their chosen sport and bring out the best of the city’s emerging new talent, without having to worry about the cost of accessing the leisure facilities.
“We are committed to investing in today’s promising athletes who have the potential to become tomorrow’s sporting heroes.”
HCAL has set up the Talented Athlete Scheme to help gifted sports people who are gaining recognition from their national governing body, but not yet at elite status.
To qualify for the scheme, athletes must be recognised by their National Governing Body and enrolled onto a talent programme as part of their development.
