Hull Young People’s Parliament has selected its latest Young Mayor.
Gabriela Surdyk, 15, will spend the next 12 months working with other young people and decision-makers to promote the interests of young people in the city.
She will attend the Young People’s Parliament at the Guildhall, take part in civic duties, and accompany the Lord Mayor at various different events.
Gabriela said: “I am looking forward and very excited about becoming Hull’s next Young Mayor. I want to make an impact over the next year; my goal is for young people in Hull to feel safer.”
Gabriela goes to Sirius Academy North where she is a student ambassador and peer mentor.
Ian Ravenscroft, headteacher at Sirius Academy North, said: “We are extremely proud that Gabi will be representing Hull as the Young Mayor. Gabi is an incredible ambassador for Sirius Academy North, she will now represent our whole city.
“What a fantastic achievement and one that she has worked hard for.”
Last year, Emily Koyunca was elected as the city’s first Young Mayor.
Councillor Peter Clark, portfolio holder for learning, skills and safeguarding children, said: “Congratulations to Gabriela, her appointment is incredibly well-deserved. The Young People’s Parliament gives young people a platform and an opportunity to be involved in issues that affect us all both locally and nationally.
“It is vital that young people’s voices are not only heard but also valued, which is why opportunities like this are so important.”
