Hull City Council’s Streetscene services win highly commended prize in the Green Council of the Year category at the 2026 Political Purpose Awards.
The awards, presented at a ceremony in the House of Commons, recognise councils leading the way on climate, nature and sustainability, from greener local services and active travel to ambitious nature recovery on their doorstep.
This commendation highlights the work that Hull City Council’s waste management team has put into the roll-out of Simpler Recycling, including a major recruitment drive, the launch of a new website and web app, and improved educational resources.
The council’s commitment to creating more sustainable communities was also recognised through initiatives such as Project Clean Streets, Love Your Street and Love Your Neighbourhood.
Further, the council’s strong focus on tackling fly-tipping, and the implementation of initiatives such as cosy home boxes for care leavers and the Christmas jumper appeal was also recognised.
Selected by an esteemed panel of campaigners, NGO leaders and business representatives, the winner of the Green Council of the Year Award was The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
The Political Purpose Awards by Nature 2030 recognises the politicians, campaigners, councils and organisations who have done the most to champion environmental causes over the last year.
Councillor Charles Quinn, cabinet portfolio holder for environment at Hull City Council said: “We’re delighted to receive this recognition for the work taking place across Hull to create a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable city.
“This commendation reflects not only the dedication of our waste team, but also residents who have embraced the initiatives, especially the recently implemented Simpler Recycling. Together, we can continue to make a real difference.”
Hull City Council continues to demonstrate a strong and sustained leadership in sustainability through 10 consecutive years of Green Accreditation, four years as a Tree City of the World, the decarbonisation of its transport fleet, and the development of a Local Area Energy Plan with regional partners.
This progress has been further strengthened by the council’s new Climate and Nature Strategy.
These achievements reflect a long-term commitment to creating a more sustainable Hull.
