Hull City Council is warning businesses that illegally burning waste could result in significant penalties, including unlimited fines and imprisonment.
The warning serves as a reminder to businesses, contractors, landowners and commercial operators, that the burning of commercial and industrial waste from any business is against the law.
As well as being illegal, materials commonly generated by businesses, including cardboard, plastics, rubber, treated wood, packaging and construction waste, have the potential to produce and release hazardous fumes when burned, posing a risk to public health and damaging the environment.
Businesses have a legal obligation (duty of care) to ensure all waste generated through their operations is stored, handled, transported and disposed of safely and in accordance with the law. Failure to do so may result in enforcement action.
The recent prolonged spell of hot, dry weather has also significantly increased the risk of fire spreading, especially if left unattended.
For example, small businesses that burn waste may unintentionally ignite dry grass, vegetation, or nearby combustible materials, leading to fires that can quickly become uncontrolled posing risks to neighbouring properties, the environment, and public safety.
The council is encouraging residents to report any businesses they suspect are illegally burning waste.
Reports will be investigated and, where appropriate, enforcement action will be taken.
Councillor Charles Quinn, cabinet portfolio holder for environment at Hull City Council said: “The council takes the illegal burning of wastes seriously and it will not be tolerated – there is no excuse.
“Businesses must understand that burning commercial and industrial waste is against the law. Every business has a legal duty of care to store, handle, and dispose of waste safely.
“Illegal burning puts staff, neighbours, and the wider community at risk. We will not hesitate to take enforcement action against offenders.”
