Hull City Council will begin essential improvement works next week as part of the Hull Heat Network, which will provide low-carbon heating and hot water to city centre buildings.
The works will take place from Wednesday 9 September until Sunday 11 October and will involve the installation of underground pipework along a small section of Lowgate, Guildhall Road, and Wilberforce Drive.
Whilst these essential improvements are underway, planned diversions are northbound via Alfred Gelder Street and George Street or southbound via Freetown Way, North Bridge, Great Union Street and Drypool Bridge.
Lowgate car park will be closed for up to eight weeks to allow for the installation of pipework. Alternative parking can be located nearby in the George Street car park.

These improvements are subject to the current repair works by Yorkshire Water on George Street being completed, to ensure minimal disruption to city centre road users.
During the works, the following roads will be affected:
- Lowgate will be closed for five weeks between Guildhall Road and Alfred Gelder Street.
- There will be no access from Wilberforce Drive onto Lowgate, Guildhall Road or Alfred Gelder Street.
- Guildhall Road (from Quay Street to the Wilberforce Drive and Lowgate junction) and the eastern gate to Hannover Square will be closed throughout the works.
- Access to Guildhall Road from The Wilson Centre side will remain open.
The work will be limited to between the hours of 7:30am and 5pm Monday to Friday; however, some overnight or weekend work may be required. Please note these works are weather dependant, and the dates are subject to change.

“We recognise that this may cause disruption for those travelling through the city centre and are working closely with our partners to minimise the impact wherever possible.
“We thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience and understanding while these essential improvements are carried out.”
The council encourages residents and businesses to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra time whilst these improvements are underway.
The Hull Heat Network is being delivered by Vital Energi in partnership with Hull City Council and will help reduce the city’s reliance on gas while providing a reliable, affordable source of heat for connected buildings.
