The Leader of Hull City Council has provided an update following recent discussions between the council and the Home Office.
In these discussions, the Home Office confirmed the remaining occupants of the Royal Hotel will be leaving the building.
The Home Office is the public body responsible for the management and dispersal of asylum seekers whilst their applications are processed and do so through its partner contractor Mears Group.
Councillor Mike Ross said: “The Home Office has explained to us that it expects all of the remaining occupants of the hotel to be rehoused within the coming weeks.
“Contrary to recent media comments, Hull City Council is not responsible for the accommodation of asylum seekers – this is the responsibility of the Home Office and Mears Group.
“Whilst the council did receive assurances in the discussions that there would be a regional focus to rehousing people rather than just in the city of Hull, we will be seeking further reassurance from the Home Office to ensure this is followed through.
“We are proud that Hull is a City of Sanctuary, but we have always been clear that the Royal Hotel is not a suitable setting and that Hull should not be used disproportionately compared to other areas of the country.”
