Hull City council, in partnership with C R Reynolds, will complete essential highway improvement works on Alfred Gelder Street during the closure of Drypool Bridge.
Works will take place between Lowgate and Drypool Bridge from the week commencing Monday 15 June 2026, for approximately six weeks.
The scheme is essential due to the deteriorating condition of the road, and the council has a legal duty to ensure the highway remains safe.
By aligning this scheme with the Drypool Bridge closure, the council aims to avoid future disruption to the highway network in this area of the city.
The works will include:
- Carriageway repairs and resurfacing from Drypool Bridge to Lowgate
- The installation of a new signal-controlled pedestrian crossing between High Street and Gandhi Way, improving access to the Museum Quarter
- Re-aligning and repairing the existing bus stop facilities on Alfred Gelder Street to accommodate the new signal crossing
During the closure, access to Salthouse Lane and High Street will be maintained via a temporary one-way system northbound from Alfred Gelder Street to Dock Office Row. Pedestrian access to local businesses will remain available at all times.
Bus stops on Alfred Gelder Street between Lowgate and Drypool Bridge will be suspended for the duration of the road closure, with diversions in place.
The council has engaged directly with businesses and residents in the area over the past few weeks. Including holding a meeting with them today (Thursday 4 June), which Councillor Mike Ross attended. We have listened and incorporated their feedback into our plans.
If local businesses, or residents, have any further questions or concerns, they are encouraged to get in touch so the appropriate support can be provided.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council said: “This section of the city’s road network is in poor condition and requires essential improvements. Therefore, it is vitally important this scheme is delivered as we have a legal duty to keep our roads safe.
“By coordinating these works with the closure of Drypool Bridge, we can complete all the works needed in this area of the city and avoid causing further disruption in the future.
“While a scheme of this nature would ordinarily cause disruption, especially for local residents and businesses, we believe that can be kept to a minimum by carrying out the work during the period of the Drypool bridge closure.
“To mitigate the impact on those in the area, we have worked alongside our contractor, C R Reynolds, to ensure pedestrian and businesses access is maintained at all times. We have also incorporated feedback from the businesses into our plans.
“We thank local resident and businesses for their patience whilst we carry out this essential scheme, and we encourage them to get in touch with us if they have any more questions or concerns – so we can provide appropriate support.”
This scheme will be completed by C R Reynolds – a local civil engineering company based in Hessle – on behalf of the council.
