A magical new family exhibition celebrating some of the world’s most beloved and iconic characters, the Moomins, will open at Ferens Art Gallery this Saturday (23 May).

The Wonders of Moominvalley invites families and grown‑ups to step into the enchanting world of the Moomins through a specially curated interactive exhibition, inspired by the stories and artwork of the Finnish writer, artist and illustrator Tove Jansson.

The exhibition brings Moominvalley to life through beautifully crafted island installations, encouraging younger visitors to explore big feelings through imaginative play. Visitors can also discover immersive projections of Tove Jansson’s striking paintings, reproductions of her Moomin illustrations, and original Atelier Fauni Moomin dolls, experiencing firsthand the gentle magic, curiosity and warmth that have captivated generations.

Designed to appeal to both families encountering the Moomins for the first time and adults returning with fond nostalgia, The Wonders of Moominvalley is a celebration of creativity, imagination and emotional connection.

Exhibitions officer for Ferens, Claire Longrigg, said: “The Wonders of Moominvalley is a vibrant welcoming exhibition that speaks to all ages. Tove Jansson’s stories are rich with emotion, kindness and adventure, and this exhibition allows visitors to experience those qualities in a playful, thoughtful and engaging way. We’re delighted to bring the magic of the Moomins to Hull and to share it with new audiences and also long‑time fans.”

Alongside the exhibition, Ferens Art Gallery will host an exciting programme of related events, including a theatre performance, storytelling sessions, animation workshops, and a special talk exploring the life and work of Tove Jansson. Full details of the programme can be found on the Ferens Art Gallery website.

Kath Wynne-Hague, Head of Service, Culture, Place and City Centre for Hull City Council said: “2026 is a fantastic year for the Ferens which continues to attract an incredible range of exhibitions. I already know that the Moomins will prove very popular with visitors of all ages, and I very much look forward to experiencing it myself.”

The Wonders of Moominvalley will be on display at Ferens Art Gallery from Saturday 23 May until Sunday 6 September.
