Following feedback from members of the public and the city’s bus operators, Hull City Council recently implemented a number of changes at the Leads Road / Sutton Road junction to address concerns about vehicles turning safely at the junction and to ensure the continued smooth flow of traffic.
In addition to updates to lane designations, changes to the traffic light configuration to enable each approach to the junction to run separately were also made.
However, since being put in place, the traffic light configuration has led to some issues with queueing traffic at peak travel times, which has resulted in concerns being raised by road users.
The council has therefore decided to revert the traffic signal configuration back to its previous arrangement. Updates to the lane designations from Sutton Road flyover, to bring the layout in line with the other arms of the junction, will remain, with the nearside lane for ahead and left and offside lane for right turn only.
A Hull City Council Spokesperson said: “The council is committed to finding ways to improve the traffic flow at this junction and we have therefore taken action to address this in line with residents’ concerns.
“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience that has been experienced, and we would also like to thank motorists and members of the travelling public for their patience and understanding.”
Work to change the traffic signal configuration back will take place on Thursday 9 April 2026 and will be done under temporary traffic lights.
