Georgian New Town latest conservation area to be updated

The public are being asked for their opinions on proposed updates to Georgian New Town Conservation Area.

A public consultation is underway, with residents, businesses and visitors, as well as property and landowners within the area invited to have their say.

The consultation is being led by Hull City Council’s planning team as part of its commitment to ensuring all the city’s 26 conservation areas are up to date as part of the Hull Local Plan.

Proposals for Georgian New Town include a new character appraisal and management plan (CAMP) and adoption of an Article 4 Direction surrounding any amendments to building windows, doors, and porches and lobbies.

The CAMP identifies important buildings and architectural features, as well as elements which do not align with the conservation area.

The Article 4 direction proposals would introduce the need for planning permission to undertake alterations to buildings with the objective of preserving historic joinery details within the conservation area.

Cllr Paul Drake-Davis, the council’s portfolio holder for economic renewal, housing and organisational development, said: “Georgian New Town Conservation Area comprises a host of delectable period buildings unlike most other areas of Hull.

“It is important therefore that the council ensures that these buildings are properly maintained to restore their heritage.

“We urge those with an affiliation to the area to take part in the consultation process and help to shape its future.”

The public consultation will remain open until Friday 20 March and feedback can be given online at yoursay.hull.gov.uk/georgian-new-town-conservation-area.

An in-person event will take place from 2-7pm on Wednesday 4 March at Hull Central Library on Albion Street, HU1 3TF.

Further feedback can be made in writing to Stephen Walker, principal conservation officer, Hull City Council, Guildhall, Alfred Gelder Street, HU1 2AA or by emailing dev.control@hullcc.gov.uk.
