Council announces second phase of North Bridge footpath upgrades

The replacement of the southern footpath on North Bridge will commence from next week.

Work to renew the southern footpath will start on Monday 26 January, following the successful completion of improvements to the northern footpath, which began in early January.

This work – which is due to take two weeks to complete – is part of a planned maintenance programme, which has been split into two phases to ensure pedestrian access can be maintained throughout.

To allow the second phase of work to be completed safely, the southern footpath will be closed. However, a signed diversion will be maintained for pedestrians via the renewed northern footpath. The council urges the public to follow the diversion route to ensure a safe crossing.

The bridge, connecting George Street to Witham, will remain open to road traffic.

Once the programme is completed, both footpaths will be renewed, improving safety, accessibility, and long‑term resilience on one of the city’s key pedestrian routes.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “North Bridge provides a vital crossing over the river Hull, so its maintenance is essential.  Once complete, the renewed footpaths will futureproof the route for pedestrians and accommodate the Freetown Way Cycle Scheme.

“By delivering the works in two phases, we’ve been able to keep pedestrian access open throughout, helping to minimise disruption for people travelling between the east and west of the city.

“Thank you for everyone’s continued patience and corporation as we work to improve this key city centre route.”

The scheme is being completed by Midland Industrial Flooring Limited (MIFL) on behalf of the council.
