Hull City Council is calling on residents to be responsible and vigilant in tackling issues of dog fouling across the city.
Now the evenings are drawing darker, dog fouling incidents tend to rise. However, the council wishes to remind residents that allowing a dog to foul on any land and failing to remove it is a criminal offence.
Anyone who fails to clear up after their dog will be issued with a fixed penalty fine of £50. If the case goes to court, as well as facing prosecution, the owner of the animal could be faced with a fine of up to £2,500.
Dog owners are therefore urged to act responsibly, and to clean up after their animals to help keep the city clean.
Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment, said: “Dog fouling is a disgusting blight on our neighbourhoods, and we will not hesitate to issue fines to those who fail to comply.
“During dark nights, it can be tempting to let standards slip, but we must remain diligent. I urge all dog owners to carry poo bags and to dispose of the waste responsibly.”
As well as encouraging dog owners to clean up after their animals, the council is also urging residents to report all dog fouling incidents they witness, to help keep Hull clean and tidy.
Cllr Quinn added: “By working together, we can significantly reduce incidents of dog fouling and improve our city’s appearance.

The council’s enforcement contractor, LA Support Limited, regularly patrol ‘hotspot’ locations across the city to deter dog fouling and help identify perpetrators.
