Traffic signals to be upgraded at junction on key route

Hull City Council has announced that it will be upgrading the traffic signals at the junction of Calvert Lane and Anlaby Road next month to help improve traffic flow and enhance the crossing facility so pedestrians can navigate the junction safely.

The council will take advantage of a planned road closure on Calvert Lane during the spring half-term holidays to upgrade the signals, after Northern Gas Networks (NGN) announced, earlier this month, that it would be carrying out an essential upgrade at this location.

NGN will be replacing ageing metal pipework with new, more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Hull, keeping homes and businesses safe, warm and connected.

Starting from Saturday 15 February, a road closure on Calvert Lane will be in place until Sunday 23 February, with a signed diversion in place for motorists but with access maintained, where possible, for residents and businesses.

Working in collaboration with NGN, the council has programmed the replacement of the traffic signals, push buttons and controllers to coincide with the gas works to reduce long-term impacts on the highway network.

The work will be carried out under temporary signals at the junction and will start on Monday 17 February and be complete by Friday 21 February.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transportation, roads and highways, said: “As a council, we are always working proactively to improve and enhance the city’s highway network for motorists, the travelling public and for pedestrians.

“We know from speaking to our residents that road safety at this junction has been regularly highlighted and that is why we are taking the opportunity to upgrade the signals with new, low-voltage LEDs and with new technology that will improve traffic flows through the junction as well as providing an enhanced crossing facility for pedestrians.

“The council always seeks to mitigate the impact that roads works have by working closely with utility companies and other agencies to forward plan works and combine different jobs so that we don’t see repeated delays.

“The council and NGN have made the strategic decision to put this closure in place at the same time as the school half-term holidays, when there is typically a reduced volume of vehicles on the network and therefore minimise any impact.”
