The fly-tipped asbestos waste was found near Preston Road, Hull.

Appeal for information after a fly-tipping incident near Preston Road

Hull City Council is calling for information following a recent fly-tipping incident involving asbestos near two east Hull primary schools.

This deposit of asbestos was found on Monday 21 October on land between Archbishop Sentamu Academy, on Preston Road, and Woodland Primary School.

Fly-tipping is not only a crime, but where it includes asbestos wastes, this extremely irresponsible act also has the potential to cause serious harm to health and the environment.

Asbestos is classed as hazardous waste and strict controls are in place regarding its disposal at appropriate facilities with environmental permits. These strict requirements are in place due to the fact asbestos can release cancer-causing fibres into the air and ground.

Residents are advised to stay away from the immediate area until the waste is removed. Meanwhile, the council is in the process of arranging the safe removal of the waste.

The council is urging anyone who has any information, or recognises the waste in the image, to come forward.

Further, if you live, or travel within the area, the council is also asking the public to check their dashcam and CCTV recordings, to help find out who is responsible for this activity.

To make a report visit the Hull City Council website or call 01482 300 300 and quote reference 470681.

Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment, said: “We would like the public to think whether they remember seeing anything suspicious, and if they do, to please contact us immediately.

“Likewise, if you recognise the asbestos waste in the image, and paid someone to dispose of it for you, please contact us. By cooperating, not only could you avoid a hefty fine, but it will help us take action against the person who has illegally dumped the waste.”

In the meantime, the council is encouraging everyone to remain vigilant of individuals and vehicles seen transporting waste in this location or elsewhere, especially if these are quiet and secluded, and report any suspicious activity or fly-tipping witnessed.

Additionally, if you currently have waste you need to dispose of, it is crucial before giving waste to anyone, to check whether they are authorised to take waste.

To check, visit the Environment Agency’s website, or call 03708 506 506.

Further, if you are a homeowner, and you need to remove and dispose of cement-bonded asbestos from your home address, you can dispose of it free of charge at the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Wiltshire Road with a Resident’s Pass.

Unfortunately, asbestos waste is not accepted at the Sutton Fields or Burma Drive recycling centres.

For further information about the Household Waste and Recycling sites visit the Hull City Council website.
