Warning issued to manage waste responsibly following two environmental prosecutions

Hull City Council is urging property owners and occupiers to maintain the cleanliness of their land, to avoid facing prosecution.

This comes after the owners of two properties in Hull have been prosecuted by the Council under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, for failing to deal with waste that had accumulated on their land.

In both cases, Action was taken by Hull City Council’s environmental enforcement officers, in response to complaints from members of the public.

The details of the two prosecutions are as follows:

  • Miss Natalie Fee of Edgeware Avenue, Hull, who failed to attend Hull Magistrates’ Court on Friday 8 December 2023, was convicted in her absence to an offence, contrary to section 79 and 80 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and was instructed to pay fines and costs totaling £918.
  • Mrs. Roisin Bond of 12th Avenue, Hull, who failed to attend Hull Magistrates’ Court on Friday 8 December 2023, was convicted in her absence to an offence, contrary to sections 79 and 80 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and was instructed to pay fines and costs totaling £1,022.

Councillor Julia Conner, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “As a council, we will always listen and respond to complaints from the public about environmental crimes.

“Occupiers and property owners must take responsibility for any waste on their land as it can blight the neighbourhood, is unfair on other residents and the council will ensure there are consequences for failure to do so.”

Hull City Council continues to urge residents to dispose of or recycle their household waste through approved services – including any of the city’s waste and recycling centres, household collection schemes, and bulky household collection services.
