Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “Local residents have contacted the council about a group of travellers who have set up camp on Pickering Park.
“Responding to residents’ concerns is our top priority and we want to reassure people that we are working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation.
“In these warm summer months, it is really important that Hull’s parks and open spaces are open and accessible to everyone – and people can use them for the recreational use for which they are intended.
“An enforcement notice is already in place on the park, with notices on the perimeter fencing. This notice was obtained on 23 May, when previous travellers arrived. It is in force until 22 August.
“Staff from Hull City Council visited Pickering Park yesterday to alert the travellers to the fact that they are there illegally, and to ask them to leave the site voluntarily. Sadly they do not wish to do so and as a result, the council has applied to the High Court for a writ to evict them.
“In the meantime, we are monitoring the area closely and would encourage any residents with concerns to contact us via the online form on the council’s website.”
