This Sunday (31 March) will see the first junior parkrun being held at Alderman Kneeshaw recreation ground in east Hull.
Children aged four to 14 can walk, jog or run their way around the 2k course.
Hull is the only place in the region to have a junior parkrun, the first one was set up in April 2017 at Peter Pan Park, West Hull. Since its launch it has hosted 94 events, with around 100 children attending each week and more than 7,500 completions of the course. Over 180 people have volunteered to make the events possible. It is hoped that the new parkrun at Alderman Kneeshaw will prove just as popular.
The event is free for all, taking place every Sunday, and starting at 9am.
Hull Culture and Leisure, working in partnership with the council’s Public Health team, have contributed match funding to set up the new junior parkrun, to encourage children and their families to become more active as part of their everyday life, as well as encouraging people to volunteer.
Parkrun Co-event Director, Stephen Sheriff said: “We are really excited to launch Alderman Kneeshaw junior parkrun. The ethos of the core volunteers at junior parkrun is to encourage children aged 4 to 14 years old of all abilities to take part in physical activity, by running, jogging, walking or skipping. This platform is a great confidence builder for children which can only be a good thing at an early age.”

It is not mandatory for a parent or guardian to participate in the junior parkrun, but children under the age of 11 must be accompanied to and from the event by a responsible adult, and the responsible adult must remain in attendance for the duration of the event.
