More than one in 10 people surveyed in the Hull area are too scared to learn to sing or play a musical instrument.
The People’s Panel is a Hull City Council-run initiative that allows residents to give their opinions on a range of subjects.
It is open to anyone aged 16 or over living in Hull or the East Riding and includes more than 2,800 residents who regularly tell the local authority what they think.
The results are used to influence the way services and local policy are designed.
Results released in March show 11 per cent of 1,345 people surveyed said they play a musical instrument.
Almost a quarter said they used to play an instrument, while 16 per cent said they would like to learn. Eight per cent said they have stopped but would like to start playing again.
Just six per cent said they regularly sing in a band or choir. About 13 per cent said they used to sing, while nine per cent said they want to learn and four per cent said they wanted to return to singing.
And 11 per cent said they want to learn to sing or play an instrument but find the idea scary.
A People’s Panel survey revealed a lot about the city’s musical ability.
People were also about their favourite live music events.
And 73 per cent said they enjoy rock or pop gigs, while just 30 per cent like to see live classical music, the survey revealed.
Just 31 per cent enjoy folk or country gigs, while six per cent of people don’t go to concerts or listen to music at all.

The importance of music to children was recognised overwhelmingly, with 89 per cent saying it was important to a child’s education.
Nine in 10 said children should have access to music opportunities outside of school, while 93 per cent said young people should be given access to music in school.More than half said they would like to go to concerts showcasing Hull’s young people.
