People caught dropping litter in Hull have been ordered to pay more than £28,000 in February.
Over the past month, 87 people have been prosecuted for littering and subsequently failing to pay £100 fixed penalties.
The offenders were ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £28,303 and each received a criminal record.
The littering offences all took place in Hull last year.
Hull City Council is once again urging people to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.
Councillor Julia Conner, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “Making Hull cleaner and greener is one of our top priorities. That’s why it’s so infuriating when people drop litter.
“Littering not only makes our streets look ugly, but it also harms our environment and wildlife.
“We are once again asking everyone to do their part in keeping Hull clean and tidy by disposing of their rubbish in litter bins or by taking it home with them.”
Littering costs the UK taxpayer about £1billion a year – money that could be spent on other vital public services.
Anyone who drops litter can expect to receive a £100 fixed penalty, which is reduced to £80 if paid within the early-payment period.
People who fail to pay can be prosecuted and end up with a criminal record and a fine of up to £2,500.
