A dramatic performance of combined arts, multi-media production involving poetry, music, and visual arts will commemorate citizen soldiers of Hull who fought in the Great War.
Made possible with support from Hull City Councils Art Development Team and Grant to Art and Arts Council England funding, Other Ranks will take on Wednesday 8 November will be performed at Kardomah94 from 7.30pm.
‘Other Ranks’ is a 800-line poem by Hull-born John Robinson with an original music by jazz musician Paul Taylor. Written for three voices and six musicians, it also includes songs. The subject is an unsentimental, non-nostalgic examination of the situation of the volunteer proletarian soldier not only in World War One but throughout history.
The musical content will consist partly of set-piece compositions which will punctuate the action, partly of electronic music and soundscape which will at times underscore the text, as will improvised interventions by the instrumentalists to form a rich synthesis of words, music and effects which will be original, engaging and will complement and enhance the ideas within the text.
Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Tourism and Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Limited, said: Artists value the local financial support that the Council offers, enabling them to showcase their work and increase their opportunities, which can include access to larger pots of funding.
