Sutton Road Bridge in Hull will undergo emergency repairs next week following a regular safety inspection.
The urgent work is taking place during the half-term school holidays when traffic is usually lighter, in order to minimise any impact to motorists.
The surface of Sutton Road Bridge is made up of a mesh based flexible surface which was last replaced around four years ago. The bridge has undergone regular maintenance however the surface has become worn and requires urgent repairs.
Councillor Dean Kirk, portfolio holder for transportation, roads and highways, said: “A routine inspection has identified some urgent repairs that need to take place to Sutton Road Bridge.
“Due to the extent of these repairs we have taken the decision to close the bridge for four days, whilst introducing mitigation measures across the rest of the transport network.
“Our council officers have accelerated the works to ensure we can get contractors and materials on-site during the half-term period when the amount of traffic is naturally reduced.
They have also worked closely with the contractor working on the Stoneferry Corridor scheme to remove as much of the works as possible to improve traffic flow.
“We apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause, and urge motorists to plan their journey before travelling.”
Additional measures to help traffic flow include co-ordination with East Riding of Yorkshire Council to divert some traffic along their road network. The diversion for those heading northbound is via Ennerdale Bridge on Raich Carter Way. Eastbound via Beverley Road A1079– Raich Carter Way A1033 – Thomas Clarkson Way A1033, and then reversed for motorists heading westbound.
Councillor Kirk said: “Rather than working on separate lanes at a time under temporary traffic signals, the full closure means we can do the work in half the time required.
“It is also anticipated that this will reduce cars queuing over the bridge and congesting back to other key roads and therefore improve traffic flows by the use of the diversion.”
The full closure will be in place from Tuesday 1 June – Friday 4 June, however pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the emergency work.
Northern Gas Networks are also expected to complete their repairs in Spring Bank West by tomorrow evening.
Motorists are advised to plan their journey using one.network.
