Drypool Bridge will be closed to road users from Thursday 28 September.
The emergency closure will come into effect from 6am on Thursday so that repairs to the non-slip/waterproofing on the lifting span of the bridge in Clarence Street can be carried out safely.
The repairs will take two days to complete – weather permitting – before reopening to vehicles and cyclists on Saturday 30 September at 6am.
Due to the location of the repair extending into the central carriageway, emergency access will not be maintained during the closure.
Pete Curry, City Engineer, Bridges, Structures and Resilience Manager for Streetscene, said: “We know that this is a popular route for many road users, but due to the location of the repair it is essential that the whole bridge closes to maintain safety.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank the public for their patience and understanding.”
The works will not affect pedestrian access, however, a short diversion over North Bridge will be put in place for cyclists and vehicles.
