A first-ever free event just for young people will kick off a summer packed with activities and entertainment. Aimed at ages 11 to 16, Beat the Heat takes place in Zebedee’s Yard, city centre, on Wednesday July 26. It brings together live music, a silent disco, circus skills workshop, clothing swap, TikTok filming area, glitter bar and more.
Everything is free and young people can drop in any time from 2pm to 6pm. The event is part of the Healthy Holidays programme, which has a huge range of free sessions for young people as well as a programme for primary school pupils, throughout the long summer break.
Beat the Heat is a chance for young people to celebrate the end of term, have fun and find out about all the other activities taking place right through to September.
Cllr Linda Tock, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People, Families and Learning, said: “We know young people can struggle to find things to do over the summer. Beat the Heat is a festival-themed event which will start the holidays with a bang. All the entertainment on offer has been designed with the input of young people and their interests in mind.
“Of course, Beat the Heat is just the beginning. Healthy Holidays has a huge range of sessions, activities and entertainment for young people. It’s not limited to sport – although that’s part of the programme.
“There are opportunities to try kayaking, rock climbing, sessions where you meet and cuddle alpacas and highland cows, yoga, mindfulness and swimming. As well as the more traditional things you might expect, like football, netball, cricket and other sports.
“Everything is free, sessions are available to view and book on the website now. There’s no eligibility criteria, so anyone can get involved, and almost all sessions include a nutritious food offer.
“In addition to providing young people with something exciting to do, we know parents and carers welcome Healthy Holidays. People are struggling more than ever, with the cost of living crisis showing no signs of remitting. This programme provides nutritious food as well as entertainment, which now more than ever, is invaluable for those who are struggling”.
Beat the Heat takes place July 26, 2pm-6pm, Zebedee’s Yard, city centre. All those aged 11 to 16 can attend – no need to book, just turn up. For more events for young people, as well as children, visit: www.healthyholidayshull.org.uk
