A free project bringing activities and nutritious food to children throughout the summer holidays will launch in Hull this week.
Healthy Holidays ran as a pilot scheme in Orchard Park last year, delivering more than 100 sessions in 31 days.
This year, it returns to Orchard Park and will also run in St Andrews, Bransholme and Marfleet wards – which experience the highest levels of deprivation and health inequality in the city.
Its aim is to ensure parents can provide free entertaining activities and healthy lunches during the school holidays.
Councillor Gwen Lunn, Hull City Council’s portfolio holder for public health and adult social care, said: “While we would rather we were in a position where there wasn’t a need in our communities for a project like this, we are very pleased to be able to deliver Healthy Holidays for a second year and to expand it so significantly.
“It’s there for the children themselves and also the parents. The children simply have the opportunity to enjoy exciting activities with their friends and a tasty lunch thrown in.
“For parents, the stress and anxiety of having to plan and budget to keep their families fed and entertained over the long summer break is alleviated. This is something free, fun and fantastic for their health.”
Activities are already under way, with children in the four wards getting a booklet with a schedule of every activity in their book bags before schools shut for the summer.
About 200 packed lunches plus fresh fruit and water will be available at the official launch on Friday 26 July at the Beach Day on St George V Playing Fields.
The event includes a real beach, fair rides, art sessions and other activities and sports.
