Hull photographer George Norris will give a talk about his exhibition in West Hull gallery today (Thursday 24 July).
Untethered features a collection of photographs taken by George on a visit to Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria in May 2024. He travelled there with this brother Carl, a horse-trader, on Carl’s horse and cart, following receiving Arts Council England funding to assist him to concentrate on photography.
George comes from generations of Hull horse traders and rag-and-bone merchants, and the exhibition shows him retrace his family’s regular journey to the fair travelling by the same means of transport.
His talk will take place at the exhibition at the new HUFree Gallery, housed within Western Library, where he will share stories and images about the Norris family heritage, the people he met along the way, and the horse fair itself. He will also give a personal tour of the photographs on display in the exhibition.
Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure said: “This is a brilliant local exhibition and I’m sure George’s talk will resonate with residents in the area.
“HUFree gallery is the perfect addition to the local area and I look forward to seeing what else the team will have on offer in the future.”
HuFree Gallery is a new gallery with a difference in the HU3 neighbourhood of Hull. It works with local residents, groups, businesses and creatives, to programme photographic, film and print exhibitions and activities, in the heart of the community. Three Ways East has co-developed this new space through itsEofUsproject, guided by artist Kate Genever, together with Hull Libraries and other local partners.
The gallery celebrates a photographers and film makers focusing on, or coming from working class life, largely from HU3 and Hull, but with occasional national and international guests. It aims to capture and reveal the kind of lives, past and present, that are often hidden and paid scant attention.
Untethered is on display until Wednesday 30 July. Free tickets to George’s talk at 4pmtoday (Thursday 24 July) are available to book here.
