Healthy Holidays will again take place this summer despite coronavirus restrictions.

Free activities to help children in Hull get active this summer

A free project designed to help children and young people get more active, enjoy the outdoors and have fun launches in Hull this week.

Healthy Holidays is here to help children and young people get more active, enjoy the outdoors and have fun.

This year, it returns with limited activities due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions but the 2020 programme includes a range of ideas that can take place outside as well as within the home.

It has been set up to ensure parents can provide free entertaining activities and healthy eating during the school holidays.

Niki Clemo, Hull City Council’s director of children, young people and family services, said: “We are very pleased to be able to deliver the Healthy Holidays summer programme for another year and to offer a broad range of activities, tips and information for children and families while easing out of lockdown.

“The programme includes something for children, young people and parents and carers to enjoy in safe environments led by trusted professionals. We know that some families have experienced some challenges over these past few months and life has felt very different, therefore it is great to see such a fantastic programme for all to enjoy that adds some highlights to the long summer break.

“We are providing extra support in some areas of the city to alleviate some of the pressures felt by a changing family and community environment. This includes a healthy food offer, cooking on a budget demonstrations, an amazing variety of fun and exciting activities to take part in either in parks and open spaces or virtually. I am really looking forward to getting out and about to see you during the summer weeks.”

Claire Farrow, Programme Lead, Public Health, said: “With most children having been out of school and away from their usual activities for the past few months, opportunities for them to be active and eat well will be more valuable than ever.

“We’ve just launched a new campaign aimed at all residents asking people to make their own pledge to move more and this could be a great place to start. Maybe you could take a family walk to and from the scheduled activities, or make an effort to do some games in the garden or park together in-between.

“Visit www.gethullactive.co.uk to make a pledge, read other people’s and find out about opportunities to be active where you live”.
