Residents are being reminded to dispose of their waste correctly this festive season after five offenders were prosecuted for fly-tipping.
The warning comes as families prepare for the festive season, traditionally handling a substantial increase in excess packaging.
Earlier this month, a resident was fined £400 for waste found dumped in land next to Saner Street, and a second resident was also fined for fly-tipping in land next to Grafton Street. A third woman was fined £400 after household waste was found fly-tipped on Ventnor Street, Hull, in November and a man was fined £400 after household waste was found by the council’s fly-tipping clearance team on Morpeth Street, Hull, in October.
A man was also fined after CCTV evidence showed him fly-tipping vehicle parts on Exmouth Street, Hull, in November.
The hefty fines were issued under Environmental Protection Act 1990 after evidence of fly-tipping was obtained by Hull City Council’s environmental enforcement officers.
Councillor Anita Harrison, portfolio holder for Streetscene at Hull City Council, said: “At this time of the year, we understand it is a busy one for many families. But as we all enjoy the festivities, it is important to remember that excess waste and recycling still needs to be disposed of in a sensible manner.
“We also wish to remind residents to not be tempted to use rogue waste collectors who are unregistered with the Environment Agency. Many of these illegal businesses can be found on Gumtree or Facebook, but we urge you to check their credentials by confirming that they are in fact, registered waste carriers.”

Hull residents can also take advantage of kerbside collection schemes, or visit one of the city’s three household waste and recycling centres. The centres are located in Sutton Fields, Wiltshire Road and Burma Drive. Please note the sites will be closed on Christmas day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
