Costello running track reopens following improvements

Costello running track will reopen this Sunday (24 August) following refurbishment.

The Kingston Upon Hull Athletics Club and Humberside Athletics Association competition will take place this weekend, after the track saw a surface respray and specialist deep clean, alongside repairs and installation of a new surface overspray.

The contract included the full replacement of the sub-base, running surfaces and line marking to main track. Other areas that have received improvements include long jump and pole-vault, track protection running rails and sand pits areas.

Detailed tracking of training and performance data for professional athletes and ambitious amateurs for integrated SMART training has been installed, which can be used alongside a smart phone placed in a running belt.

The works that started earlier this year were completed to secure the track’s long-term sustainability, including continued hosting of licensed athletics events affiliated to UK Athletics.

Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure said: This is the first time in 20 years that this incredibly popular running track in Costello Stadium has been refurbished, and we’re pleased to have invested in the facility for visitors to enjoy for many years to come.

“Residents tell us they want a council that will improve local facilities and services – we’re listening and doing that.”

John Brant, Kingston Upon Hull Athletics Club coach said: “This inter-county match, which is open to the public, reflects the commitment that Hull City Council has towards track and field in the city.

“Look out for more prestigious fixtures planned for 2026 in the stadium.”

The track is now Track Mark approved

Costello running track has now also received Track Mark accreditation, administered by UK Athletics, which ensures that athletics facilities are safe and well managed. It also means competitions held at the facility will be recorded and officially recognised.

The refurbishment was funded through Hull City Council’s capital programme from the Corporate Building Maintenance allocation and was completed by Bernhards Sports Surfaces Limited.

Costello stadium and track first opened in 1985 and was last refurbished in 2005.
