A public consultation that could lead to the redevelopment of derelict listed buildings and vacant land in the Beverley Road area has been approved by Hull City Council’s Cabinet.
The six-week consultation into a site including Brunswick House and the Strand will begin in mid-August. Cabinet members agreed to expand the site area to include Brunswick Arcade and Kingston Youth Centre.
The landmark Brunswick Arcade, which dates back more than a century, has stood vacant for more than 10 years. It is on the council’s register of at-risk buildings and has become a target for arson and anti-social behaviour.
The building has been identified by the local authority as a priority within the Beverley Road Townscape Heritage scheme, designed to regenerate the city’s main northern route.
The six-week public consultation is required ahead of formal adoption of a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), which gives the development greater weight when determining any forthcoming planning applications.
Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for economic investment, regeneration and planning, land and property, said: “Brunswick House, the Strand and Brunswick Arcade are key buildings within the wider Beverley Road area and it is essential the council does all it can to bring about their redevelopment aligned with the aspirations of the Beverley Road Townscape Heritage project.
“Consultation on the SPD enables the public to have their view on whether the youth centre and its associated land should be included in a broader development opportunity. I support the opportunity provided to consult on the wider development opportunities for this part of Beverley Road.”
