Hull City Council has today appointed Mason Clark Associates to progress investigations on the River Hull Walkway, to determine its future.
The River Hull Walkway (boardwalk) is an ageing structure, historically used to carry pedestrians over the west bank of the River Hull, between Myton Bridge and Drypool Bridge.
Following a routine inspection in July 2021, the structure was found to be in a very poor condition, and due to concerns for public safety the walkway was partially closed.
Since then, biannual surveys have been carried out to monitor the walkway’s condition.
To determine the future of this historic structure, the council has appointed Mason Clark Associates to conduct inspections, investigations, and surveys over the next 24 months.
Following the investigations, Mason Clark Associates will develop a final scheme, which will be delivered to stakeholders for consultation.
Gillian Osgerby, interim assistant director for major projects and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “The River Hull Walkway is a key part of Hull’s maritime history and a vital connection between Myton Bridge and Drypool Bridge.
“We are pleased to appoint Mason Clark Associates, and we trust they will deliver comprehensive investigations and surveys. Their support will help determine the future of the structure.”
Andy Thompson, director of bridges at Mason Clark Associates said: “As a Hull-based company, we are delighted to be working alongside Hull City Council on this iconic local structure.
“Our team of dedicated engineers are ready to investigate the condition of the structure and help develop a scheme of works to determine its future.”
This appointment has been funded by Hull City Council’s Bridges General Capital Budget.
